The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE receives an extensive update that affects its design, powertrains, infotainment system and driver-assistance technologies. It is not an entirely new generation, but the changes are significant enough to clearly distinguish the 2027 model from the current GLE.
The Canadian lineup will include several electrified gasoline engines, a new GLE 500e plug-in hybrid and the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e HYBRID. SUV and Coupe body styles will continue to be offered, depending on the powertrain.

1. It Is a Major Update, but Not an Entirely New Generation
The 2027 GLE represents a comprehensive evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s midsize luxury SUV. The manufacturer has updated a large portion of its design, electronics and powertrain range without moving to a completely new platform.
That distinction matters. The GLE retains its familiar size, market position and practical qualities while gaining the latest digital technologies developed by Mercedes-Benz.
It also remains one of the brand’s most important products. Its history dates back to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class introduced in 1997, one of the early modern luxury SUVs. Today, the GLE competes primarily with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Porsche Cayenne.
2. A New Exterior Identity Featuring the Mercedes-Benz Star
The front end has been substantially redesigned. New headlights incorporate a twin Star motif, while the grille becomes more prominent. An illuminated Mercedes-Benz Star surrounded by a chrome frame visually emphasizes the vehicle’s width.
A new generation of DIGITAL LIGHT headlights with micro-LED technology will be available. The taillights also receive graphics inspired by the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star.
These changes do not alter the GLE’s basic proportions, but they bring its appearance closer to the latest electric and flagship models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
3. The Powertrain Lineup Is Particularly Extensive
Mercedes-Benz is not limiting the GLE to a single form of electrification. Instead, the Canadian strategy includes several levels of electric assistance.
The GLE 350, GLE 450 and GLE 580 use an integrated starter-generator capable of temporarily providing up to 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of additional assistance. This system is designed to improve initial response and make the automatic start-stop system operate more smoothly.
The GLE 350 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp. The GLE 450 moves to a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 375 hp, while the GLE 580 retains a 4.0-litre V8 that now develops 530 hp.
A more powerful electric auxiliary compressor is also planned for the GLE 350 and GLE 450 to help reduce turbocharger response time.
4. The GLE 500e Becomes the Versatile Plug-In Hybrid Choice
The GLE 500e 4MATIC is one of the most significant additions to the Canadian lineup. Its plug-in hybrid system combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor.
Combined output reaches 429 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz estimates that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
This version is intended for drivers who want to complete part of their daily travel on electric power while retaining a gasoline engine for longer journeys. It could be particularly relevant for Laurentians drivers who cover greater distances or who do not want to rely exclusively on public fast-charging infrastructure.
Mercedes-Benz Canada has not yet confirmed the GLE 500e’s electric range, battery capacity, charging time or charging power. Those specifications will be required before its efficiency can be compared accurately with other plug-in hybrid SUVs.
5. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e HYBRID Is Coming to Canada
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e HYBRID is also new to the Canadian market. Offered in SUV and Coupe forms, it combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with a 181-hp electric motor.
Total system output is 577 hp and 553 lb-ft. AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension are included in the announced mechanical package.
The estimated 0–100 km/h time is 4.5 seconds. Its electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h, or 140 km/h when operating entirely on electric power.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programs include Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, Trail and Individual modes. As with the GLE 500e, its official Canadian electric range has not yet been confirmed.
6. 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive Remains Standard
Every 2027 GLE announced for Canada comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. This remains particularly relevant for Quebec winters, although proper winter tires continue to play the most important role in braking and traction on cold, slippery surfaces.
AIRMATIC air suspension will be available and standard on the GLE 580. Its new intelligent damping system can use cloud-based information to anticipate certain road imperfections and adjust in real time.
The final Canadian equipment configurations will determine the availability of AIRMATIC on each model.
7. MB.OS Transforms the GLE’s Digital Architecture
The 2027 GLE adopts the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS, as standard. It supports the fourth generation of Mercedes-Benz User Experience, better known as MBUX.
The MBUX Voice Assistant uses artificial intelligence to better understand naturally worded requests. MB.OS is also intended to simplify software updates and coordinate several vehicle functions through a common computer architecture.
The new MBUX Superscreen is standard. It combines three 12.3-inch displays beneath a continuous glass surface: the driver’s instrument display, the central touchscreen and a dedicated front-passenger display.
An MBUX Augmented Reality Head-up Display will be available.
8. A More Technological and Still Versatile Cabin
A sliding panoramic sunroof will be standard. An available Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos will be among the major cabin options.
In the GLE SUV, power-adjustable second- and third-row seats will be available. The optional third row is more of an occasional-use solution than a direct substitute for the passenger space of a full-size three-row SUV, but it increases the GLE’s family versatility.
The GLE Coupe places greater emphasis on a sporty presentation. Its standard AMG Line interior includes contoured sport seats and AMG sport pedals, although the sloping roofline may reduce practicality compared with the conventional SUV.
9. The Driver-Assistance Systems Are Now Called MB.DRIVE
Mercedes-Benz now groups its driver-assistance technologies under the MB.DRIVE name. The 2027 GLE will include MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 as standard, while MB.DRIVE ASSIST and MB.DRIVE ASSIST PLUS will be available depending on the model and selected equipment.
These systems use cameras, radar and other sensors to support the driver. They do not make the vehicle autonomous and continue to require the driver’s full attention.
The Transparent Hood function uses the 360-degree cameras to generate a virtual view of the area directly in front of and beneath the vehicle. It can be helpful in a tight parking space, on an uneven trail or when approaching a low obstacle.
MAGIC VISION CONTROL will also be standard. It delivers heated washer fluid directly through the wiper blades for more precise application.
10. Who Is the 2027 GLE Designed For?
The 2027 GLE serves several types of buyers because of its broad powertrain range.
The GLE 350 is the most straightforward choice for daily driving. The GLE 450 provides greater smoothness and power from its inline-six. The GLE 500e will appeal to drivers who can recharge regularly at home, while the GLE 580 preserves the character of a V8. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e HYBRID is aimed at buyers who prioritize performance but still want the ability to drive on electricity over certain distances.
Mercedes-Benz Canada expects the GLE SUV, GLE Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e HYBRID to reach Canadian dealerships during 2026 as 2027 models. Pricing, fuel-consumption ratings, plug-in hybrid electric range and final Canadian equipment specifications will be announced later.
Mercedes-Benz Ste-Agathe will then be able to provide more information about the versions offered in Quebec, available options, expected delivery times and the practical differences between the GLE 500e and the mild-hybrid models.
